The Challenge

Imperial College London (ICL) contracted our support to develop and implement an Environmental Management System (EMS) conforming to the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard.

The project involved operating to a demanding timescale, and Loreus was appointed to provide a comprehensive support package covering EMS implementation, staff training, legal compliance support, and internal auditing.

The project ultimately culminated in a successful external certification audit conducted by a UKAS-accredited certification body.

Our Approach

We began the project with a detailed gap analysis to review the systems and processes already in place, assess their alignment with ISO 14001 requirements, and determine the overall scale of work required. Following this review, Loreus produced a detailed proposal outlining the implementation plan, key milestones, and the target certification date.

Once the proposal was approved, Loreus began developing a tailored EMS designed specifically for ICL. The EMS included clear, practical documentation aligned with the requirements of the standard, while also integrating existing processes wherever possible. Where gaps were identified, new systems and procedures were developed to ensure full conformity with ISO 14001.
Regular meetings were then held with key personnel across the organisation to provide guidance, support, and training on the new processes. These sessions also provided opportunities to answer questions, gather feedback, and ensure the EMS remained practical and effective for day-to-day operations.
Loreus developed the environmental aspects register and a comprehensive legal register to support compliance management. Existing environmental objectives were incorporated into the EMS framework, and support was provided to establish an appropriate management review process involving senior leadership representatives. This ensured that all required ISO 14001 management review inputs were properly addressed.

In preparation for certification, Loreus also conducted multiple internal audits to identify potential gaps or issues ahead of the external audit process.

The Result

The external certification audit was completed successfully in April 2026, resulting in Imperial College London achieving ISO 14001 certification. The organisation now has a robust Environmental Management System fully aligned with the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard.
