The Challenge
Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT), as part of the NHS, was subject to a range of environmental reporting and sustainability requirements. One of the most significant of these was the requirement to develop and maintain a Green Plan aligned with NHS Net Zero ambitions.
The NHS has established ambitious carbon targets, aiming to achieve Net Zero for directly controlled emissions by 2040 and for indirect emissions by 2045. As a result, NHFT required support to develop a practical and credible Green Plan that aligned with NHS requirements while remaining achievable within the operational realities of the Trust.
Our Approach
Loreus had already been working with NHFT for several years across a range of environmental and sustainability projects. As a result, there was already a strong understanding of the organisation, its operations, and key stakeholder relationships when the updated Green Plan was required.
Ahead of the submission deadline for the revised Green Plan, Loreus was commissioned to develop a structured methodology for producing the document and reviewing progress against actions completed during the previous three-year period.
The approach centred around detailed interviews with a wide range of staff members from across the Trust. These discussions were used to identify completed sustainability initiatives, gather operational insights, and understand projects and changes planned for the coming years that could be incorporated into the updated Green Plan.
Loreus then consolidated the findings from these interviews into a clear narrative structure alongside a detailed action plan for inclusion within the document. Draft sections were shared with the relevant contributors to verify accuracy, gather feedback, and ensure that the final content accurately reflected the Trust’s activities and future ambitions.
Finally, all information was brought together into the completed Green Plan, alongside a summary action tracker designed to support annual progress monitoring and reporting by the Trust going forward.
The Result
Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust successfully published its Green Plan online in line with NHS and Government requirements. The Trust has also established a sustainability committee with responsibility for overseeing, maintaining, and updating the Green Plan on an ongoing basis.
Loreus continues to support NHFT with its Green Plan development and wider environmental reporting and sustainability requirements.
